Why the fuck did Ray Gillen leave Sabbath

Different stories. According to the other guys in Black Sabbath, Ray was struggling with recording the vocals for the new album. According to Ray, he left because Black Sabbath’s management wasn’t paying him.

Ray had also contracted AIDS and was lying to EVERYONE about it, having unprotected sex on tour and spreading the disease around. The other guys in the band knew about the AIDS rumors. Glenn Hughes confronted Ray about it a couple times, and Ray lied to him and even showed him a faked AIDS test to “prove” it was just rumors. Personally, I think the story that Ray wasn’t able to record is bunk. I think the Black Sabbath guys were trying to push him out of the band before the situation got any worse.

In fact i thought that he contracted AIDS several years after leaving Sabbath, because he founded Badlands after that and well… he still looked quite healthy back then. I also heard that shit about lies he told to his lovers… that’s disappointing. I heard that he wasn’t good at writing lyrics and didn’t feel the atmosphere of BS, also the band wasn’t at its peak so i thought probably it was the reason why he left. I don’t actually know if it was good or bad for Sabbath in the end, but i like The Eternal Idol with his vocals more… however i adore Martin too so well, let it be. And omg, i didn’t know that story with Glenn, holy shit! You know so much as usual!

One of the girls he infected stated she’d contracted an STD from him in 1986, when Ray Gillen was touring with Black Sabbath. We will probably never know the whole truth, because Ray lied to everyone about it. Glenn said they were watching Freddie Mercury’s tribute concert together (so it must’ve been 1991) and Ray was denying that he had AIDS then. Remember, too, that people can be HIV+ for years before developing full-blown AIDS and seem relatively healthy during that time.

In the 80s-early 90s, when Ray was sick, AIDS was considered a “gay disease”. There were attempts to correct that belief, but that was still the prevailing wisdom. It was a death sentence then. AIDS was super-fucking-nightmareishly scary. Ray lied, and denied it, and did awful things to people who assumed they were safe around him. He tried to sexually assault Ann Boleyn from the band Hellion in a parking lot outside their rehearsal studio – the interview seems to have disappeared from the web, but I read it a couple years ago, and for what it’s worth, I absolutely believe Ann. I think the guy was deranged.

Highway Star – Lesser Gods:

Hey guys! If you are interested, here is Ian Gillan’s autobiography! You can check it here!

“Ian Gillan details nonstop partying, groupies, drugs, alcohol, friction with guitarist Ritchie Blackmore and how everything spiraled out of control, ending the band. He continued solo and with Black Sabbath before ultimately reuniting with Deep Purple. The band released its twentieth album in April 2017, peaking at #6 on Billboard’s Hard Rock Albums chart, and is conducting a farewell tour in fall 2017.”
